SEO or Google Ads: which should a small business start with?

13 October 2026·5 min read·By the adagency360 team

Every small business owner asks this eventually. Both put you in front of people searching on Google. The difference is in speed, cost and how long the results last.

How they differ

  • Speed: Google Ads can bring enquiries soon after launch. SEO is slower to build up to strong results.
  • Cost: with ads you pay for every click. With SEO you pay for the work, and the clicks are free.
  • Durability: ads stop the moment the budget stops. Rankings built through SEO keep bringing traffic long after the work is done.
  • Trust: many people skip the ads and click the first organic results, especially for research-heavy decisions.
  • Control: ads let you choose exact keywords, locations and hours. SEO results depend on Google's ranking decisions.

Start with Google Ads if

  • You need enquiries right away to keep the business running.
  • You're launching a new business, location or offer.
  • Your website is new and has little chance of ranking soon.
  • You want to test which services and keywords bring paying customers before investing in content.

Start with SEO if

  • You can be patient while results build.
  • Clicks in your industry are expensive, as in legal, finance, real estate or healthcare.
  • Customers research for a long time before buying.
  • You want a lead source that doesn't rise in cost every year.

The approach that usually works best

For most small businesses, the answer is both, in stages. Run focused Google Ads for your most profitable services to bring in leads now. Use the search-term data from those ads to learn which keywords actually convert. Then invest in SEO for those same keywords, and gradually reduce ad spend as organic rankings take over.
